Paying for College
You can receive money from a variety of sources to pay for your education and training. This can include the following:
Personal Savings
- IDA (Individual Development Account): UIDAN helps low-wage workers save for the American Dream by providing a $3-for-$1 savings match and money management training.
- Trusts and Estate Planning
- 529 Plan: A 529 Plan is an education savings plan operated by a state or educational institution designed to help families set aside funds for future college costs. It is named after Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code which created these types of savings plans in 1996.
- Utah's Educational Savings Plan (529 Plan): Utah's 529 educational savings plan.
- Coverdell Education Savings Account a educational savings plan similar to the 529 Plan, but it may also be used for elementary and secondary education.
Student Financial Aid
All student financial aid applications begin with FAFSA.
- Grants: Needs based aid that does not have to be repaid.
- Loans: A form of financial aid that must be repaid with interest.
- Work Study: Provides students with employment opportunity both on and off campus. The program is generally based on a student's financial need.
- Scholarships: Financial aid for students that qualify based on financial need, academic, artistic and athletic skills. The money does not have to be repaid. You must apply for all scholarships. Many are offered by public and private schools and private sources. Two of them are:
- New Century Scholarship: The New Century Scholarship is designed to assist Utah high school students in obtaining a bachelor's degree.
- Centennial Scholarship: The Centennial Scholarship is a full- or partial-tuition scholarship that can be used at any postsecondary institution in Utah that is accredited
Other Financial Resources
Financial aid for training may be available for eligible clients of:
- Vocational Rehabilitation
- Department of Workforce Services
- The Military
