Making Your Home Accessible

You may need to build a ramp to enter your home or make other changes to your home to make it more accessible. There are different programs that can help you with these changes.

When you buy a home, you may want to ask about an SF Rehabilitation Loan program (203k). This is an FHA loan for rehabilitating and repairing single-family homes. You can get one loan which combines the mortgage and the cost of repairs. The mortgage amount is based on the projected value of the property, when the work is complete. The advantage of this loan is that you can buy a home that needs work, but have only one mortgage payment. Then you complete the repairs after you buy the home.

The Utah Center for Assistive Technology (UCAT) is an interagency resource coordinated through the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation. UCAT evaluates a home environment and recommends modifications that are needed. They also can assist in locating funding sources and help you contact them to ask for services. UCAT can also help resolve conflicts that come up in the funding process.

Once you own a home, you can contact ASSIST—Architectural Consultants: Assist, Inc. is a non-profit Community Design Center that provides accessibility design for persons with disabilities. ASSIST provides home assessment and design services to evaluate the safety and accessibility of people's homes. They also help with these features in new housing. The ASSIST Guidebook to the Accessible Home (PDF) provides help in the design and modification of homes and is available on the ASSIST website.

Emergency Home Repair

This program is designed for senior citizens and low income home owners, buyers, and in special cases, renters. The program offers services to qualified applicants for immediate emergency home repairs. To apply call (801) 355-7085. ASSIST/Emergency Home Repair offers two home repair programs:

  1. Emergency Home Repair—ASSIST will pay 100% of the repair costs. No liens will be placed on the home as a result of the repairs.
  2. 0% Deferred Payment Loans—Loans are offered in participating communities to make multiple critical repairs. No payment is due until the sale or transfer of title for the home. A lien will secure the loan.
